so I swithced to look like this
domain2.jpg

now. http://www.knippixels.com doesn't work.

obviously, I'm doing something wrong. any ideas?

Thanks, Jim

What do you have your custom hostname set to in your Smugmug account settings?

Once you have your Smugmug hostname set to "www.knippixels.com", you will want to change your DNS back to a CNAME pointing at www.smugmug.com.

Thanks, Bill. my smugmug hostname was set to www.knippixels.com. I just switched the CNAME back to www.smugmug.com.

when I tried to go to www.knippixels.com, I still get the "you're lost, aren't you" page.

however, the GODADDY page has this disclaimer; "CNAME: Added or updated record successfully! Please allow approximately 24-48 hours for the DNS to propagate on the Internet."

I'll keep checking to see if it changes.

Thank you again for the help.

That is notwhat we explicitly state in our help instructions :)

CNAME www.knippixels.com to www.smugmug.com put www.knippixels.com in your domain field of your control panel (it is).

If it's not working, no worries, we can sort you! Send mail to our help desk, and give us the access we need to your godaddy account (we do it all the time).

    Cheers.

    Jim,

Here is what your DNS is currently advertising:

    host www.knippixels.com
www.knippixels.com is an alias for knippixels.com.
    knippixels.com has address 64.202.189.170
    knippixels.com mail is handled by 0 smtp.secureserver.net.
    knippixels.com mail is handled by 10 mailstore1.secureserver.net.

    Translation:

There is a CNAME for www.knippixels.com but it points to "knippixels.com" instead of "www.smugmug.com". If you get that CNAME changed, your domain will start working with your Smugmug account.

    Bill, this is what looks like now, and has for two days;

    dmn2.jpg

    that's right, isn't it?

per Andy's request, I emailed the help desk with the needed info to fix it. I'm confident that they will. :D

    thanks again, Bill.

Change the first line to "www" points to "www.smugmug.com"
and delete the second line "www" points to "@"

(if the smugmug wizards haven't done it already)

Bill, I sincerely appreciate your efforts to help me here. I could make those changes, but not sure if I should.....

for one, I emailed the info to the help desk, per Andy's request, so they could fix it. I don't want to ruffle any feathers here by changing settings after I asked them to. (I already have a problem with putting threads in the wrong forums:D )

second, if I'm reading it right, you're telling me change it to www points to www.smugmug.com.

but Andy said change it to www.knippixels.com points to www.smugmug.com.

maybe that's the same thing, I don't know. its all new to me.

again, Bill, I appreciate the help. but for the stated reasons, I haven't made any changes yet.

(I've been hoping Andy will chime in and say either "Jim, go ahead and do it" or "Jim, don't do it" .)

btw, I realize that this got started because I didn't follow the instructions exactly in the beginning. thumb.gif

    Thanks

    Jim

It wouldn't let me set the first box oif line one to just 'www', so I left it at www.knippixels.com. then, I deleted the second line, as Bill mentioned.

    and now...... IT WORKS!! clap.gif

Andy, I emailed the help desk with the access info on thursday afternoon. do I need to send them "disregard previous message" email, since it now works?

once again, thnks Andy and Bill.
