Resulution isn't very important if you want to do pp. 1024x768 works
very well. However a higher resolution is good for convinience reasons.

If you're serious about pp and want to calibrate your monitor you should
pay attention to even elumination of the (especialy tft/lcd) screens and a
good contrast behavior (1:800 or higher) as well as viewing angle. Not all
monitors with equal specifications are equal. Their out-of-the-box color
behaviour and their ability to be calibrated matter. These information can be obtained by reading online reviews on monitors for pp/graphic work. A
pro grade 1280x1024 tft is around 4-500€ 1600x1200 starts around ~800€.

Another much cheaper option is to buy a brand 22" CRT monitor (iiyama etc.).
This one will beat almost every tft on the market hands down with the specs
    above.

It's good, not poor or great. In the middle. It depends on what software you use and how you use it.

I'm running a 1680x1050 widescreen (20") and I kind of wish I'd gotten a 23". In Lightroom, the side panels take up space on the sides, so I try to keep the left panel closed. In Photoshop, the palettes take up a similar amount of space, but at least I can move those to the second monitor.

The more you like your software to keep lots of post-processing palettes open alongside the image and the less you like to zoom in and out all the time, the more likely it is you might want to try one of the 1900-pixel width monitors.
