I've been after these guys for more than two years and finally I managed to get some decent shots of this pretty bird in breeding plumage.
C&C welcome,
Socrate
Hi Jeff, Thanks for your comments. These were taken in my backyard from a distance of about 10 feet using a 30D with a Canon 500mm. I have a feeder set up and I shoot from a hide. I also did a little crop.
Thanks, Marina. As I said to Jeff I shoot these fron an hide in my backyard. The hide is about 10feet away from a bird feeder I set up in my yard. I used a 30D with a Canon 500mm, and during the editing I apllied a little crop.
Wowwwy!
Those are beautiful birds and you did a great job.
I know your plight...I've got my eye on a red tailed hawk that keeps teasing me almost every day...I have some perching and BIF shots but none good enough for my liking - sometimes he will fly past my window about 15 ft away just to snub his little beak at me...
The birds are absolute beauties, and so are your captures of them. The exposures are perfect, leaving well defined detail in the plumage and of course, these all feature that trademarked perfect Shasoc background. Wonderfully done!

Thanks, Mike., and good luck with your red tailed.

The shots are a little bright for my taste. I tried loading the first image into my editor and adjusted the exposure slightly and liked the results.
Your exposure was 0-50-100.....my edit was 6-52-94....which gave it a little more contrast and deeper colors with a slightly darker image.
I don't mean to nitpick or criticize....these lovely shots. Different people see things in different ways.:D
Hi, Ric. I appreciate your franc comments, and I agree with your assessment. I also like the images a bit on the dark side, and I usually go for that. Thanks for pointing that out. Feel free to re-edit my pics any time you like. I'll be looking for your honest comments in the future,
Socrate
Outstanding set, excelelnt colors, fine detail and some nice bokeh.

I'm glad you took it in the spirit it was intended. Feel free to tell me your honest thoughts on my posts also. Your images are always very good or better....so I might even listen to you!:D

I've had the honor of knowing Socrate for about a year and a half now, and I will say he has been an outstanding teacher for me. I know my images today aren't all that great, but a year ago, they were flat-out awful . Socrate was very helpful and encouraging to me and certainly a big part of my improvement. Aside from being a top-shelf photographer, he's a great person and an effective mentor.
I'm not saying this in defense of him, as I know you were by no means attacking him. I guess I'm only saying this because I know he's new here and I think I may be able to provide you all with a bit of a better introduction. I hope you all enjoy his company and input as much as I have.
