My 580EX speedlight is refusing to power up. Yes, I have changed batteries. I don't use this baby much, but it may be out of warranty. Any ideas of what could be wrong? It's like brand new only I've had it for awhile. :dunno

It is old information, bui it really is a good idea to remove batteries that you are not actively using in expensive electronic equipment.

The newer batteries are less likely to leak than they used to be, but there are still exceptions. Glad things turned out ok.

Even in the days of film cameras, if I knew I was leaving one in the closet for a while, the battery comes out. Even with digital, I've had too many experiences grabbing a still or video camera I hadn't used for a while and the battery had trickled its charge all the way down in the equipment, and I would lose the opportunity unless there was another charged battery. They keep charge better stored outside the device.

Thanks people for your advice. I always (in the old days!!!) use to remove my batteries from everything, camera, etc. and I know I should get back to that habit. It's more of remembering to do so! Actually, this time it was the new replacement batteries that leaked. (Fortunately, before I put them in the flash). The others had just expired. Which reminds me.........I should go remove them now! Need to reorgranize my gear anyway. Didn't end up using the flash this time because.....well...I forgot my off-camera cord...rolleyes1.gif. It's always something.

I have this problem as well. Very chronic! I'm always forgetting something. My wife naggs (to the extent that she ever does - she's so wonderful!) that I should make a list of what I need and then use it before leaving for the shoot and before returning - just to make sure that everything I need goes and returns.

Hehehe....I've been saying that very thing about making myself a check-off list, but I haven't done it yet!!! :D
