Rolex 2007 3-Day Event

Greetings from Kentucky. Here are a few captures from yesterday's Cross Country phase of the Rolex Three-Day Event, the only CCI**** held in the United States and one of only four held in the world each year. Current leader Kristin Bachman on Gryffindor:




Amy Tryon on El Samurai was in 2nd place (first after dressage), but withdrew and will not be competing in stadium jumping today.

Heidi White Carty on Northern Spy are now in second:

Clayton Fredericks on Ben Along Time from Australia are now in third:

Will Faudree on Antigua was fourth, but also withdrew after cross country:

And Karin Donckers on Gazelle De La Brasserie of Belgium now in fourth:


I was present for one really nasty crash - with Heath Ryan on Flame from Australia catching a hoof on the front edge of the wagon jump and never quite recovering. Flame jumped up and appeared to be sound, Heath was conscious and moving, but received medical attention.

Nice series! It looks like you actually have nice weather at Rolex...that of course is because I'm not there. I always bring bad weather, it even rained in Vegas when I was down for World Cup.

I love the shot of Karin imitating the Man from Snowy River, it makes me feel better about the way I got down banks . Seriously though nice shot!

The of Heath is terrific as well. I'm glad to hear they're both all right. Did you get a series of this or just the one shot?

I hope you have a good time shooting stadium today, can't wait to see more.

Before you pass judgement on the weather, you will need to take a look at Thursday Dressage pictures - probably will not get a significant number of them posted until I return. Yesterday and today were nice- if you like bright sunlight.

I am not sure that she would appreciate that shot, but I wanted to post something from each of the leaders.

I have 19 frames of the crash - rear rail to horse rolling over on him - shooting RAW + JPG so only got 19 of them before I filled the buffer so missed the paer where the horse finished rolling over his legs and got itself upright and I refrained from shooting Heath on the ground with the medical crew. Very nice work. I was also (see my post above). It was a great weekend. I saw Heath Ryan go over the brush jump in great form (Bruce Davidson just had a crash there). And two jumps later Heath hit the deck.

For dressage I shot with a 400 2.8 - will get some of those posted in the next couple of days. For cross country I went with the 70-200 2.8 (with a 1.4 multiplier at the water complex with the ducks) or a 16-35. The 400 was 00 erroring occasionally in the vertical orientation and the reason I would have used it for cross-country or stadium was for verticals, so it remained unused over the weekend as I just did not want to miss any jumping shots. For stadium (also need to get those posted) I used a 70-200 on one body and a 135 2 on the other.

I didn't know you were a Smugger. Have admired your work for a while. Haven't been able to make Rolex a priority for several years, but perhaps next year.

I'm got a bit confused when I saw your site. Are you and Tim Poulsen in collaboration somehow? Some of the photos in your display had his copyright on them.

Hi Mark,

Tim has been my equine photography mentor and frequently brings me in as a second shooter -we also occasionally collaborate. When we both received credentials for Rolex this year we decided that rather than elbowing each other for position we should divide and conquor and pool the images to create a stronger portfolio - I think it went well and we have received comments from competitors and sponsors that they thought we had the strongest collection of images that they had stumbled accross from the event - the full collection of images are on Tim' Photoreflect site i.e. both my set plus Tim's. For my troutstreaming site I only posted my images for the top ten finishers and a couple odd balls (Heath Ryan and Flame's fall, Ian Starks last Eventing competition; Amy Tryon and Le Samurais last ride; and Kristin Bachman's first to last Stadium ride) before other shooting considerations diverted my attention away from Rolex.

So for the equestrian work between my shooting for myself, my shooting with Tim in collaboration, my shooting for Poulsen Photography, my occasional post-processing of Tim's images (like the World Cup IR's), and even a few of Tim's images cross posted back to my smugmug site there are quite a few variations of copyright floating around. I think that everything on my site is correctly assigned as to who shot what and who to contact to negotiate rights if you look at captions and titles, but it does make it complicated. So if the watermark says J Andrew for Poulsen - I was the photographer under hire and Poulsen holds the commercial rights; there are also some images that just say Poulsen Photography with no photographer on the watermark that are mine shot for Poulsen (in the Photo Journal and 2006 Equine galleries for instance) and a couple of Tim Poulsen for Poulsen Photography in the daily Rolex galleries; and finally a warermark of J Andrew Towell or Towell with Troutstreaming.com is shot by me for me. Clear as mud right?

Rolex was good - but a lot of effort. They issued >100 photography press passes this year so I spent a lot of time keeping a chunk of ground warm to insure that I was going to get the angle I wanted and really never got to wander around or relax. Sometime in the future I need to figure out how to get sponsored for just covering a single rider so that I can spend more time exploring and looking for grab shots.

I was talking to a Canadian tog at Chatsworth who was using the 400F2.8 from the same position as i was using the 300F2.8 i would love to see the difference

Can't help you with direct comparisons from Chatsworth but from a practical perspective from Rolex- Shooting dressage to fill the frame I was finishing my sequences when the vast majority were just starting. Most of the photographers were in the 100-300 mm range - about the time they stopped, shooting I started again - this time to get head shots or close ups of equipement. I was trying to shoot my dressage as single, planned frames, rather than machine gunning and so at times hearing all of the shutters firing off as people just laid on the triggers was distracting. Being done with my sequence helped prevent it from being too big of a distraction.

These are not presented as the be all and end all of eventing dressage shots, but should give you a good idea of what I was framing with the 400 on a 1D mk 2N from about 30' off of the corner opposite the entrance to the ring. All are uncropped and unsharpened, but were run through I2E on smugmugs settings for color and contrast enhancement.
