What teleconverter for Nikon D50 and 80-200mm 2.8??

I am looking for recomendations for what teleconverter to use with my D50 and 80-200mm 2.8 I want to use it for sports and nature photography. I really don't want to pay the $300 for the Nikon TC-20E II.
So what are your opinions? Thanks

i have the 2x and i would not recomend it to you. it is very slow to focus on my d80 and 70-200 2.8 i have heard good things about the 1.5x and 1.7x. i only have the 2x becuase someone gave it to me because he did not think it was good.

Jason... much of this depends on which 80-200 you have. But I agree with speedracer04 that a 2X TC will have your body hunting for focus.

I have the 80-200 AFS and the Nikon AFS TC-20EII needs a lot of light to not hunt. If your lens is the D or push-pull, Tamron makes a good 1.4 and 2X TC that should work for you. No AFD 1.7X TC, by Tamron, that I've found.

I know that the Sigma 1.4X EX I originally purchased for my Bigma doesn't mount my other lenses and disables the AF due to the Bigma's f/6.3. I researched and found that the Kenko Pro DG 1.4X works great on all of my lenses and allows AF with the Bigma (although it doesn't report the modified focal/aperture).

As most have indicated, 2X TCs usually aren't worth the loss in aperture/IQ.

Hi Jason - I believe the Kenko MC 1,4x Converter Nikon AF PRO 300 DG is a very good alternative. The series is also available as 2,0x and even 3,0x. Obviously the latter is at a considerable f-stop sacrifice. The optic quality is apparently very good and considerably cheaper than the Nikon series.
Thought I'd just mention it.
