I'm just back from a trip to West Africa and this shot of a Pink-backed Pelican caught my eye.

I'm not geared to shoot birds and was using a 70-200mm 2.8L + x2 = 400mm @ f5.6. My faster 200mm 1.8L was just too heavy for small boat use and as I was fishing rather than taking photo's the smaller lens made sense.

If I went to shoot birds seriously it would be with a minimum 400mm + a x1.4 or a 600mm would be better still......

This shots rotated slightly to compensate for the angle I shot at and cropped slightly. A bit of sharpening and a touch of dust removal.

I'm a bit dissapointed with my wildlife aka 'bird' shots. I didn't take very many but they really are poor :rolleyes ...............

This very boat-plane like Pelican was One of only a few usable shots. The Fish Eagles are just about ok but anything smaller just isn't up to showing...

I do have over a hundred Dakar 2005 pic's shot in the hell hole of Kiffa, Mauritania......I'll put a couple up in the right area later....(It was not a nice place to be:uhoh )

So for those 'Twichers' a Pink-backedPelican, Pelecanus rufescens....

Looks pretty good to me, the bird is nice and sharp and well exposed. The OOF white line across the frame right below him/her would get a heavy dose of the clone tool if it were me.

Your right..I had tried to upload the pic at 125k and got bounced as the max is 117k. I went back and got confused with jpeg's bigbird001 and Pelican001 one of which had a drop in the eye's bottom left pixle. to match the top right head for a print I ran off. Now they both have the same 'eye' for detail (they are copies of the same file). I had to think hard to remember what I was doing last night. Well spotted...

Un-intentionaly not mentioned and not done to confuse or misslead. To be honest I'm still in culture shock and just put it up cos I liked the way this huge great bird had an attitude that matched it's ability to fly....

Here is the original head just sharpened at 150.
