Yeah, the maps feature was here. But if I read the article correctly, Google is now including user data, like images tagged at Smugmug, as search results for Google maps searches.
So someone searches for churches in Albany, NY and one of the results is a Smugmug image of a church in Albany that someone has on their Smugmug site. This is new, no?
huh, for some reason I thought that smugmug page talked about it. But yeah, it's 'newish'... I'd say it's been around for a few weeks or maybe even a couple months now.

I believe these are two different technologies we are talking about. There's geo-tagging in Smugmug, and then there is the new User Content for Google Maps. They are separate. Google is not pulling data from Smugmug for their user content search. What Google is doing is searching user content, and some of the content created by users has links to Smugmug.
I was just messing around with Google's new user content, "My Maps" and it's very cool. What people are doing is creating their own map and linking spots to other sites like Smugmug. They give you the option to make your map public or private. If they are public, I believe google will include them in their search. Im still waiting for mine to show up in a search.
Check it out. I created a map that has links to my photos at Smugmug.
