Hi everyone,

I'm doing a photoshop course (PPSOP) and i wonder what y'all think of this picture below :D.

Lonesome Tree
The full-res version is here: http://www.streetsofboston.com/photos/148796413-O.jpg
The original picture is here: http://www.streetsofboston.com/photos/45465998-L.jpg

C&C is welcomed.
I can't grasp the notion of time.

When I hear the earth will melt into the sun,
in two billion years,
all I can think is:
"Will that be on a Monday?"

    Photoshop process
This is what i've done (more or less) in photoshop to get this effect:
    • Used Channel Mixer adj. layer to make black and white.
    • Used Curves adj. layer to add a little contrast.
    • Used another Curves adj. layer to make sepia (increase R channel, decrease B channel)
    • Used a background copy, blending 'luminosity', and layer mask to selectively sharpen the tree with HIRALOAM.
    • Used a layer (blending 'overlay'), filled with 50% gray and applied film-grain filter from filter gallery.
    • Used two layers (blending 'overlay'), filled with 50% gray to make scratches. On each layer i applied the 'Craquelore' filter from the filter gallery. One layer i rotated 90 degrees to make vertical scratches. I added a mask to each one of them to have scratches only in certain areas.
    • Added a 'normal' layer. Made a selection with the lasso tool, feather 50px. Inverted the selection and filled with white.
    • Some very light dodging/burning on the background layer.
I can't grasp the notion of time.

I get distracted by the items in the foreground. I would clone them out and try and isolate the tree more. Clean some of the brush out maybe and recrop to feature just the tree.

    My two cents

I agree somewhat that the tree does not quite appear to be the focal point that it should be. Outside of that, I like the feel of the PP effects. The photo truly looks "old" (with the exception of the white frame). Based on your processing outline... I can see I have a LOT to learn yet about PP. I am a big fan of black and white and even more so sepia so this shot definitely strikes a cord with me. Thanks so much for posting it and for sharing your processing information.

Thank you very much for your comments!

I replaced the old version with a new one.
I cropped it to show more of the tree, less of the foreground... although the tree does not seem to be so lonesome anymore :)
