I pulled the trigger on this.

I'm having a bit of cognitive dissonance but I think I made the right choice for my needs. Anybody have any experience with the older version (which isn't that old)?

Wow! I was going to order the 580EX and then they announced the II. That is first time I have seen a release date (May 10 for those not following the link). Calumet still has 4-6 weeks and B&H is simply taking pre-orders. I can now plan on ordering it next week! clap.gif

The Amazon link of the OP is also only taking pre-orders. D'oh. As stated above, the release date is 10 May 2007.

As for experience with the 580EX - nothing but smiles from me. For examples, check out this thread (link) - some very extreme conditions in which to work with a flash.

If the II is anthing like the original, you're going to love the new flash!

Thanks for the link. I read through it, but I thought the pictures were outstanding. I really didn't the flash was that "hot" in the pics. I'm thrilled and excited now. I am heading to the Texas coast for some good birding in June so I hope to really get some good use of it.

Do you use a flash bracket or do you connect the 580 directly to the camera?

Most of the time I have my 580EX off camera and I trigger it with the ST-E2. When it is on camera, I am usually using it for fill rather than as a main light. A flash bracket is better for fill because it lets you shoot in portrait orientation, but I have not shelled out for one yet.

Thanks. They are not "that" hot, but there are some hot spots that less (more ?) than ideal. More practice is in store.

As for the bracket - oh yeah, otherwise you can get ugly shadows when shooting in portrait orientation.

The ST-E2 is a neat little addition to the flash set-up. Unfortunatley, I don't think I have the money for anything else at the moment. :cry
