Does this shot work?

Had a great sunset tonight and thought I would give the latest round a shot.
This is the best I could do to fit in with the theme:

I like this shot more but don't see how it would fit...do you???

Thanks for the thoughts.

I agree. #2 is a better shot but it has little to do with the themes.

#1... well, it's a gate alright. But let me ask you: if it was not for the challenge, would you take it? Would you brag about it to all your friends? "Hey, guys, look what I got today" eek7.gif
    Yeah, me neither... ne_nau.gif

On the bright side, you have 8 more days:-) mwink.gif

    Thanks Nikolai,
Your right - never would have taken that shot if not for the contest.
I'll keep looking for those silhouettes out there...

#2 is a very pleasing shot. If you can get a similar composition and get a light reading off the sky you'd get more of a silhouette...and a more dramatic-looking sky. mwink.gif

You still have too much detail showing up in the boats and dock for it to be considered a true silhouette. As per Wikipedia: A silhouette is a view of an object or scene consisting of the outline and a featureless interior. mwink.gif

If at first you don't succeed...
Here's another try at a solid entry.
Headed down to the Charles river in Boston. Really hoping for a sailboat across the setting sun but none to be found.
    Saw this boat pass by:

Saw a couple of guys fishing and liked this one of them photographing one another:

Still have a few more ideas to try to capture in the next few days but would greatly appreciate any thoughts/comments/critiques.
    Thanks,

    clap.gif There ya go!!!

#1 is awesome, but it's a pity you can't see the entire boat. :cry Do you have a "landscape" version of that one by any chance? The light on the guy at the tiller is really pretty on that one and he's perfectly framed by the sun.

Maybe one of the other folks might chime in with an idea for a crop...headscratch.gif

Had the sun been a little higher in #2 so that it would have cast a glow on the water similar to #1 you would have had a more dramatic shot.

It IS very pretty, however I agree with Linda. Watch, this will probably be perfect for the NEXT challenge! mwink.gif

The one of the boaters on the Charles is lovely!! I can't decide how serious the lack of the full boat in the photo is. At this level of challenge, it might make the difference between and yay and a nay from the judges, but it sure is a beautiful silhouette.

    Thanks Virginia, Tessa, and Linda!
I was so caught up in getting to a point where I could shoot this boat crossing under the sun that, when I lifted up the camera, I just shot 3 quick frames in portrait. Wish I had thought to hold the camera the 'right' way!!!
Still I like the guys posture and the detail of the kids in the boat (glasses, caps). Can't decide if it'll make it in the top-10 or be another one where one judge likes it but the rest pass. There's some darn tough competition for boat/sun shots so far and we haven't even seen from those who hold back til Sunday yet....
The second is a bit too late as far as the sun I think. Was waiting for these guys to do anything as the sun set but they didn't even throw out line. This was one was different enough that I thought I would post it. The wind is kicking up and it's a hot day again so, if the wife lets me leave her and the 18 month old behind, I may try, try again...
Thanks again for the comments. Come back in a day or two to help me out with the next one(s).
    E

ps - Tessa, what do you mean about the next one??? The future themes aren't posted are they?
