You have some nice shots there Gus. It does kind of suck when you shoot action that is considerably faster than what you are accustomed to. Last year I went to shoot motorcycle road racing, after shooting motocross week after week. They were so much faster, it took a few heats to get the timing down. It's good for you (us) though.

I was at a loose end yesterday so i rode an hour out of town to this event. The guys & girls are dropping some 1800 feet down an escarpment in just 2 mins 41 seconds for the fast guys. Most of which is under a power line easement.
I lost just so so many shots as i thought i knew how to photograph these races but this one was just that fast. Very little under 1/2000 turned out so i was lucky to get what i did.
Down through the rock garden.
Of all the races ive been to...this was the fastest i have ever seen. I was honestly struggling to get them.
Coming down the shute. Normally these are about 40 odd feet deep & the same width. This was the godzilla of all shutes !
Go hard or go home seemed to be the call for the day.
Man there were some terrible accidents. I did my fair share of picking up the dead & the wounded from the battlefield.
The jump.
Personally i would be a lot more concerned with the posibilty of landing on a big fat Death Adder than worring about the following 'crutch pain'
That looks so dangerous
Wouldn't wanna come a gutsa on that track at all.
Besides that helmut they don't have a lot of protective gear on do they.
Yeah well I'd be checking that me crown jewels were all still in tact if I had a spill like them blokes
You got some great shots there Gus, they look great .
Well Done! ..... Skippy

You may have lost alot but your keepers are awesome, they capture the angle of descent aswell as the spped they are travelling at perfectly.
Well done!
On a side note, what was it you think you did wrong to lose so many shots?

gus - great shots! personally, I think the wide capture in the rock garden is awesome!
and i'm impressed with how well you've picked up gravity racing lingo... "rock garden" "chute" I remember all of those features from my own racing days.
Must be an odd balance in the world. DH has lost a little bit of popularity here in the states just as you say its picking up down under.

Thanks elaine. Great fun & action packed for about 6 hours. A rider coming past ever 30 odd seconds keeps you on your toes.
That must make the time fly by! I'm curious...do you use a burst mode or continuous advance in situations like this, or do you focus on a spot and wait for the rider to come and just click once?

30D on burst mode with the 135mm prime f/2. I usually sit on about f/4.5-f/5. Aint a lot of lenses about that is as fast to focus or as sharp.
