My theory is this: Buy the best you can afford......if you can afford the SB800 then go for it as it should leave you lacking later on......the other side to my theory is this.....do I need waht the mst expensive flash has to offer.....now ....I shoot with 3 sunpak 622's and 1 KM 5600 HS....I actually use the Sunpaks more than the 5600....cause if I bring them out it is a paid shoot and that huge flash seems to impress the clients....I also really like vivatar 285's.......as you can see most of the falshes I use are not totally auto.....the sunpaks do not have a ttl cord....nor does the Vivatars...so I shoot them in manual.....just do not trust a totally auto flash......

If you can afford the SB-800, get it. Otherwise the SB-600 will work for most shots.
It would also be nice to know your plans with the flash. What are you shooting that you need a flash? Weddings? Family? ...or just when it gets to dark for your lens?
