Hello everyone. I am just starting out and reading everything I can get my eyes on :wink about the key principles of photography. Then just taking my camera out and shooting for practice. I'd like to get some constructive criticism of some of the photos I have taken so far.
This is just one of several photos. But any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The focus and narrow depth of field on the shot are OK but the composition isn't particularly interesting. Alos the colros are kind of muted and don't grab you.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
Your shot is interesting, i'm assuming you're using macro lens? At least some part of your image, i'm guessing the center of the flower, should be more in focus and sharper then it is. Also, you image needs more light, it looks dark on my screen. Keep on reading and shooting, it all gonna come together one day. Have fun and post some more! :ivar

I made my own "macro" len with a 5x stitch counter from a craft store. I have no run this through any software yet. Like I said, I am getting into the hobby. I want to make sure I understand the basics before I go out and kill my wallet, or at least have my wife kill me for spending a small fortune on the gear.
Excellent advice from everyone. Just remember - like anything else, it takes practice to improve. Keep on shootin'!
