I know someone who may sell me one. I tried looking on ebay but most of what I got was batteries. On DPreview and it said the MSRP is 2,000 dollars. WHat would the price be of a used D60?

Thanks, Trevor.

The D60 is over 5 years old - it predates the 300D and the 10D. 3 point AF and is imited to 1000 ISO. None of these mean that its a bad camera at all, just dated. But I hope your friend is selling it for a lot less than $2000.

I found recent completed auctions from $380USD to $250USD. Remember the D60 will not use EF-S lenses.

I think I paid about $600 for a D60 around three years ago or so.

Check around Buy/Sell forums for a current price.

Original price of D30 was $3000
Recently I sold one in mint condition for $250 :cry

D60 is next model - so price around $350 is possible but not guaranteed.

Well that's a pleasant surprise then. I currently am not a 6 figure kinda guy (let alone 4) so for me this price is very reasonable. And it takes EF lenses so I can still keep those once I upgrade to something a little more up-to-date

Then again, a brand new Canon dRebel 350D/XT is around $500USD, and it's a much more responsive and modern camera, with a full warranty.

A Nikon D40 is just a little more with a kit lens, and a Pentax K100D is a little less with a kit lens.

dSLRs are not that expensive anymore.

Here is a quick summary of Canon oldies:

The early Kodaks in the 90's are huge, heavy battery eaters. You probably don't want them.
D30 - 3MP $200, first DSLR from Canon not in collaboration with Kodak
    1D - 4MP $700, first professional DSLR, 1/16000 shutter, 8fps.
D60 - 6MP $300, a bit noisy at high ISO, colors are kinda pale, but perfectly usable IMO.
1Ds - 11MP $2,000, even noisier than D60, some artifacts, but colors are beginning to look good, and very high resolution. At low ISO can defeat most modern DSLRs.
10D - 6MP $300ish, color worsen because Canon's customers wanted low noise and they were not bothered as much by inaccurate colors. Beginning of an era marked by plasticy skin tones.
300D - 6MP $300ish, cheaper version of 10D. Not enough buffer and too easy to get the "BUSY" sign. Last camera to store distance info in EXIF.
20D - beginning of modern Canon DSLR, very fast writes to CF. Having become market leader by offering outstanding low noise high ISO performance, Canon began to turn attention back to color accuracy and has been steadily improving since then.
350D (Rebel XT) $500 new - almost as good as 20D. Only problem is the AF. The 9 point system is a lot better than the 7 point system IMO.

Summary: the latest and greatest are balanced all-round performers, but the oldies are excellent value if you don't mind the quirks and limitations.

Trevor, I have a used XT for sale, in great condition, for much less $$ here.

Also there's hte fact that I theoretically wouldn't spend any money. I'd help this photographer I know do some yard work (removing old dead trees from his back for money) and if I worked enough he'd give it to me. I do a lot of tough work so I can use that money on a lens instead of body.

Sounds like a good deal. A quick search on KEH has an EX body at $349. KEH's "excellent" is "like new" on ebay.
