We got the Nikon 70-300 AF-S f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR (about $300-$400 more than the one you're looking at), and so far we are very pleased with it. I would suggest putting the extra bucks in and spring for the VR, which certainly comes in handy if you don't plan on always packing a tripod with you everytime you want to shoot wildlife. Trying to snap little critters on the long end of this lens without the VR or tripod is quite a challenge. We had debated between the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and the Sigma 70-300 f4, and on the advice of our local photo shop guy, went for the Nikon (the f2.8 was out of our snack bracket too!). Its not a tack sharp lens, is a bit on the slow side, but we were assured the picture quality was better on the Nikon. A good bang for you buck!
