My first thought was that his face was out of focus... It took me a second to two to process that the focus was on his hands.
It might work better if the crop was different with the hands a bit higher, i.e. near the bottom 1/3 of the photo versus the near the bottom edge. My eyes are still drawn to his face...

I think the 2nd is more striking... The tatoo'd hands jump out at you more - they're higher in the frame, they are sharper and more contrasty. At least on my monitor, the hands/arms almost seem to float in space, kind of making you wonder if they belong to the priests face in the bkgd - but since you can see a touch of tat coming up on his neck, there is no doubt (but I still think, IMHO, that if his sleeves/vesiments didn't blend in quite so much, it might help)
he seems like a very interesting person - and the pic kind of makes you want to know his life story.
The second one is miles better than the first, but I still wish I could see more difference between the background and his dark clothing.
Very interesting person, indeed.
I have a question though. Talking about seperating his cloths from the background, am I right in thinknig that a back light or key light would help get this seperation? Something to light just the edges of him? I'm looking to try some low key pictures soon and trying to figure out just how to do it. Thanks for the help.

I like the concept, but agree about the crop

now he's a preacher?-
if so, neat-
reminds me of robert mitchum in 'the night of the hunter'-
he was a con artist/sham preacher with 'love/hate' tattooed on his fingers-
a very strange but intriguing movie-
with an almost thin shelley winters-
and lillian gish-
and the only movie that charles laughton directed-
I trust your guy is the real thing, though-
btw, a neat shot-
