need help with my domain name (cname)

i have my domain name brisomphotography.com registered through host gator.

I pretty sure I've got things correct at the host gator end but when I try to set up the domain through smugmug it gives me the error

That hostname doesn't appear to be valid. It doesn't resolve to a hostname.

I'm at a real loss here if anyone could lend me a hand, it would be great. thanks

After having set your domain, it may take up to 48 hours for everything to resolve correctly.

If after that time, if things are still not working as they should, please contact us at the helpdesk. If you are not sure about the settings at the registrar and don't mind giving us your username/password, we'll be happy to take a look for you and set it up correctly if needed

ok, now I know why, I cancelled my web site at hostgator and by doing so they also cancelled my domain name with them as well - which I didn't know about until just now - so please disregard and you can cancel/delete this thread - i will register over at joker and then map it

well this thread isn't dead just yet. I found out the real reason. when I cancelled my hosting with hostgator - they still keep my domain active however I can't setup a cname without hosting! - that's a gotcha I wasn't planning on, so i have initiated a domain xfer to joker.com - well now I read on joker.com that the domain must have been active for 60 days on the original site before it will be xferred over - so now my real question is this: I know I can use brisomphotography.smugmug.com - but once my domain gets xferred and I setup the cname to smugmug - will then brisomphotography.com work as well? - in other words they will both work correct?

Yes they should. Once the cname and your full domain is setup and working photos you have linked, links you have sent people, etc should keep working. I say should because we all know how computers are. But it is setup so that you won't have broken links when people try connecting with just the subdomain.
