That's cool, man!
Do you enjoy SL? I was reading about it from quite some time, but simply don't think I have enough mental bandwidth to invest...
I'm in there to investigate some business things (like is it worth setting up shop in SL). Having said that it's very addictive. My TV broke a few weeks ago (it's beeing repaired atm) but I haven't missed it ..
Funny - that would be my intention if I had decided to go for it...
So, if you don't mind my asking, what do you think of SL from such POV?
Hmm, I am not quite there with the total overview yet. The issue is that while the fees are reasonable the payoff may not be there. Linden Labs publishes a prety comprehensive set of business statistics but abnormalities are not flagged and as such any transfer of funds is a "business transaction" and I would prefer the info was watched over by a 3d party (though perhaps there are.
A lot of the convetional wisdom applies, location as in stuff around you (though teleporting and flying make some rules inapplicable ).
Marketing is really doubly important in this space where people can teleport form one place to another.
My plans atm are to get my stuff into some virtual galleries and rent some shop or land to set up my own mini gallery space(s) - not so much for my photos, more for illustration and perhaps some other design stuff. Later perhaps I'll look into getting together with some other folk and buy some larger piece of land and set up more complex interactions & products (I have a friend that runs a real "Where AV meets IT" business so perhaps I'll work something out there).
Large companies such as IBM , SUN and Amazon have some seriously cool presences in there which may be useful for meetings, doco and some such but I haven't seen too many people hang out in those areas (perhaps I missed the events however due to time differentials).
I could see this being VERY cool for communities & user groups however it's almost tailed to the "social" (if anyone is starting a Smugmug island - page me ).
ha! haven't run across it yet
I'll have to go check out that landmark.
I'm in Second Life for education purposes --- this semester we had students in an introductory astrobiology course build an exhibit, "History of Earth and Life on Earth" --- a scale model dating back 4.6 billion years ago. We recently put in a NASA grant for some islands to have an astronomy/NASA portal, educational activities, recreate Mars/Mars Phoenix mission, and a slew of other cool stuff. For me, it's about all the educational possibilities! Right now I'm working on an 'avatar navigated 3D concept map' structure for a slew of content bits on astrobiology.
There are all sorts of neat places...it's not just XXX and gambling, nor just buying/selling virtual comodities.
If anyone is interested, IM me through dgrin and I can pop your avatar landmarks for some of the really built up semi-educational (like, informal education, science museums, weather exhibits, natural park exhibits, etc) places as well as other cool places.
It does tend to take over your first life
For the artificial vs organic challenge, I was working on a hybrid of a portrait of my real self (organic) and my avatar self (artificial). Second Life DOES have a camera (Snapshots), so technically...

Anyway it never materialized.

Adrienne, that is interesting - I am actually the IT manager for a school (t'is the job that pays the bills) so I do keep an eye on that too. The Space Science Museum and some of those things are very cool. Pity the place I work at would never see the usefullnes of SL.
Just for giggles I made myself a t-shirt. I have to ask Gus if I can use his graphic to make an SmugMug one .
For some reasons my bunny slippers weren't on when I took that snapshop. Oh and Adrienne yeah the concept of in-world photographers is interesting and they do exist .

yeah, I'm really getting absorbed by Second Life. It's so hard to stay ahead of the game and keep current with all the happenings in-world (like which big organization or company published a presence) , let alone all the academic projects! Some 80% of my job now is SL related (including all the social learning theory and research)...if we get the NASA grant, it'll be all I'm doing.
I've been taking more SL photos than real life photos lately Seriously, it can take me 5-10 minutes to set up a shot with the camera HUD!
I'd wear a dgrin shirt in there, I like your photodojo shirt - can I have one?

I've been poking into second life quite a bit with a couple weeks of vacation. The pro photogrpahy market in SL is starting to pick up. There are a couple pro shops and several SL photographers that are impressive. Here is my first portrait from a model i had to pay L$500/hour (Linden dollars, like $3 USD ha) and used free studio lighting. The model in real life is a nursing student in France.
I have some other photos, but they are rated "playboy"
I'm looking at rent space, purchasing a studio, and taking work to some of the galleries. Right now i'm working strictly freelance in SL
Guys, SL is going to be relevant.

So in summary - yeah I do
Yup - bunny slippers .. it's my version of fighting the trends .

Great min-review, thank you very much!
