Without knowing who the judges are going to be it's almost impossible for me to pick one...

I'd say it would be better to focus on your photographic strengths at this stage and come up with a superb photo than try and second guess the judges' preferences...just my humble opinion.

    Good luck!

I agree 100% with Sunita. Play to your strengths and make a photo that makes you and everyone who sees it say "wow!" If you can do that or even come close then you will have a winner whether or not it makes it into the top ten. Go for it!

call me dense but how can you take a picture of a child or person without it being a portrait??? i'm confused.

not that it matters, honestly, i don't understand the need to quantify which way the wind is blowing. ne_nau.gif

A "portrait" of a person or child, I would define as a shot that looks posed. Certainly there is lots of room for interpretation on this subject. But think of a portrait as a shot of a person or persons (or animal) in which the background, lighting and posing look intentional.

AFAIK, a portrait by definition is simply a likeness of a person.

now whether that portrait is formal or casual or candid or __________ is what's determined by the setup, posing, etc.
