Preserving Print Cartridges

My photo printing occurrs in spurts. Is there anything I can do to keep the cartridges from drying out in between spurts? I have an HP printer and it uses one black ink cartridge and one tri-color ink cartridge. Would it behoove me to put then in an airtight container between printing spurts? :scratch
