I have been photographing my wife's jewelry for her website for a while and we are getting really tired the same old pictures over and over again on a plain white background. I did some experimenting over the weekend and so far I am really happy with the results.

Any comments and/or suggestions are welcome.

Very nice. I have done some jewelry shots for my cousin. She deals with natural stones--so, we used stones as a back drop. I really like the 3rd image. One thing I am going to try, the next time I photograph her jewelry, is to stack some images--so I can show as much detail as possible.

Have you tried shooting on Cloth Material as a background yet ?
Pieces of Drift Wood as the background they hang from maybe ?
    Mirrors ?
Some kind of Mesh Wire ?
    Netting ?

I've never tried to shoot jewelery, so I'm just thinking out loud with suggestions :D

headscratch.gif Interesting post. I'm getting some valuable rings in a couple of days to photograph for documentation prior to selling. I do have a studio and a good macro lense. Any comments pertinant to what I need to capture to prove the identification and value would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone. I am shooting in a tent, using 3 lights. Two 30 watt lights on the sides, and 1 smaller light in the front aiming directly onto the jewelry.

Skippy, I may use some of your ideas. Driftwood would be a perfect match for the earthy feel we are going for. We just bought a bunch of different color and textured paper to use as backgrounds. I'll have to look into trying some fabric.

It depends on whos buying, but if her customer base is more men buying gifts, I'd put them against some flesh.

We have played with that idea. Her customers tend to be more women buying directly, or women buying gifts. I think the guys who are buying jewelry tend to go for the finer things, like diamonds, gold, etc... Her jewelry tends to be more specialized and hard to pick out for someone else.
