Need advice and help with photo - blown fleshtone?

I need some help with this photo. Does the light on the side of his face need to be dealt with? Any other thoughts on making this better?

The story
I was at the park waiting to shoot some engagement pictures and there were many young couples dressed for the prom. My client was late and here I sat with my gear. A couple of the families were only using small point and shoot cameras or disposables, so I volunteered to take a few shots.

About 4 hours later this couple was in a serious accident. The young lady was killed instantly and the young man severely injured. Her mother has contacted me wanting to buy copies. I would like to prepare this for enlargements or possibly a canvas wrap and give it to the family.

Would this work on a canvas? I've never done one. His hand is so close to the bottom edge.

Should I try to clone the tree heads?

Any advice or help is truly appreciated.
Dana

Fixing blown flesh tones is a piece of cake if you know the trick and almost always a good idea. Take a look at this thread.
    If not now, when?

    Before

    After

Used your post, a little low opacity cloning on hand and jacket sleeve. Tighter crop.

    Better?

Looks like you did a great job on the face. I also like the tighter crop.

The picture is too small for me to see in detail but it looks like the sleeve is softened from clone stamp. I would also decrease the black levels as most of the shadow detail in the boy's jacket is lost.

What a sad story, Dana! I'm sure you are wondering how it came to be that you were there to take this nice picture of such a lovely, young couple. Bless your heart....what a nice gesture. :cry

    Thanks Nikos!
Can you please explain to a PS challenged person, how you would decrease the black levels? Pull the black slider in to the right some in levels adjustments?

Yes there was a reason I was there with my camera and just started taking pictures of random couples for free. Out of 50-60 kids at the park, I only took two couple's pictures.

After we get the blown part and the jacket fixed....... What to you think of the tree heads? Should I attempt to remove them and how (exactly) would I set the stamp or would I use another technique?

I'm thrilled everyone is so helpful with this.

Yep...I can see the pocket on the sleeve.

    Dana,

Nevermind, the shadows in the jacket are fine. My Huey LCD screen calibration profile was showing darker shadows than usual and now on recalibration, everything shows up correctly.

As for the levels, if you move the black slider to the right, you're actually darkening the shadows. Keep your eye on the histogram and make sure that you're not clipping any shadow information.

Dana, this was just a quicky clone job. You have lots of leaves to clone from, fortunately. I set my opacity on about 90 with the brush on the softest setting. I didn't entirely cover the tree, but started from the edge of their hairlines and moved upwards until I felt the branch was no longer a distraction. You can clone more if you choose. Not sure of the best way to do this, but that is how I did it.156338977-L.jpg

    Wow thanks so much everyone!

I do see the pocket cloned the sleeve. I will have to fix that.
I'll try my hand and cloning the trees and see what I end up with.

    Thanks again.
