Lab cast correction question?

I'm only into chapter 3 and correcting cast is a bit to absorb....
My question is:
Is there a problem with using threshold adjustment layer, either in RGB or LAB and setting the black and white eyedroppers....I notice doing that in LAB gives only B&W whereas RGB gives me the gray dropper also?
I think this 'trues' up the B&W and I thought it helped the cast....
Maye I am not getting it....Actually I know I am not getting it and this is a quick and dirty workaround....
Is it viable or way off base??
Thx,
Scott
