Lumix FZ20, 5mp. 12x optical zoom, 48x total zoom. 36-342 2.8f lense (stock).

Some times i really hate this camera. I think the immage noise is more dominant at night shots.

as seen..

1st, 400ISO (as high as it goes, w/ noise reduction on full)

2nd, the pool shot.. 100 ISO.. Yeah, a couple things could be different. It was fenced off, so I couldn't get as close as I wanted to.

Other night shots @ 100 ISO.. I don't understand.. It can turn out stunning shots, like the flowers and the jet engine. -I LOVE the color in that one!!!!

A very quick fix for noise.

In PS Elements 4, (I don't know what program you use)
open say the 1st picture in this post. Click Filter>blur>smart blur.

    Set it to

    Radius - 1.6
    Threshold - 8.8
    Quality - high
    Mode - Normal

This has worked well for me in the past with noisy skies.

Especially with lower-end equipment, nailing the exposure is critical to noise suppression. Underexposing a shot is like leaving the starting line late at a race...you're got more ground to make up, and you lowered your chance of victory. If you are shooting Raw, you should shift your histogram to the right as far as it will go without clipping details.

    The concept

    An example

For instance, it looks like you could have increased the exposure of the first shot, because it doesn't look like there's anything near pure white. If you needed to brighten it in software, that would dredge up all the noise in the shadows and make it more visible.

In the JCPenney shot, there's color balance and contrast and correctly blown specular highlights. It has many bright areas for a night shot, and that probably pushes the noise down.

I see what you're saying.. The example of stepping the exposure level up slightly, and it keeps the noise down.

Thanx for the help.. The camera desn't have RAW. It has TIFF, tho.. I tried it a couple fo times, all it does is give duplicates for editing.
