my cousin - b&w

Easter was traditionally a day for a family gathering on my father's side of the family. Due to circumstances (and better weather) it's been moved to whitsun.

I ended up taking not so many shots as I thought I did, but I really liked this shot of my cousin. Of course I decided to blow it a bit, just enough for my little bit of PP skills to not be able to fix it. Andy's solution: Black and white. I'm glad I listened.

The sweater turned out a little dark, but I like it.

Comments, critiques, especially on the conversion much appreciated!

    Hi George,

The shot wasn't blown by much, but I seem to like the b/w much better. The colored version just doesn't show the way she acutally looked, if you know what I mean.

    Thanks for looking!

    Ivar, nice picture !
I like B&W better because in my opinion she looks more feminine.

Haha, that's a great reason to like the b/w more. I hadn't looked at the shot that way yet. I'll have to look at it again now :D

    Hi Ivar!

While I'm not sure the color shot is blown (let's say it's bright :D), the B&W is killer, and, at least to me, it's all about the contrast in that B&W.

It puts a lot of life in her hair, and it makes her blouse and the background darker, further directing attention to her face and her lovely smile and expression (which is, IMHO, the #1 thing in portraiture -- everything else is secondary).

    Great job!

    Thanks so much for sharing!
    Take care!

    Hi Thiago,

    Thanks for your comments.

It is mainly the red channel that is blown, or as good as blown.
I agree, the expression and smile is what is the important thing in portraits.
    Thanks!

I think Thiago's just about covered everything, so all I'm gonna add is that it is a lovely crisp conversion of a wonderfully natural portrait!

    Nice work.

She's a pretty girl and looks good in both color and B&W, but I like the punchiness in the B&W. Nice shot, Ivar! thumb.gif

B&W thumb.gif Sometimes a shot can say everything you need it to say with tone only. I think this is one of those.
