Whent back to the lake to hunt the purple dragon :D

First up the composition I wanted yesterday but couldn't get. This guy was perching on the ground and I hate shooting them from an "I'm about to step on it angle". But he was feeling territorial and I was feeling lucky, so I added all my tubes and took a few shots at almost 3x. This scene is only 8mm wide (about 1/3 of an inch).

All Canon gear: Xti (manual mode F16, 1/200, ISO 200) + 62mm of extension tubes + 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter. MR-14 EX ring flash set to a 4:1 ratio and 0 FEC.

This is the female of the species. I found two of them hunting bees from a peach tree. The bees get into very predictable patterns and the dragons exploit it by finding a place in their "flight path" from where they can swoop in for the kill.

All Canon gear: Xti (shutter priority 1/200, ISO 200) + 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter. MR-14 EX ring flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -2 FEC.

Thanks -but that's gonna be a while. I was "playing" with a 24-105mm lens + 25mm tube tonight and realized that I could use it for closeup shots. So now all I need to do is save up the money for an MPE-65 for the macro side (1x - 5x).
