today was a beautiful day in northern california. a top 10 weather day in my book :bow to the weather gods... i had the good fortune to be able to shoot with my good friend, fine photographer, and great dgrin contributor, steve cavigliano. we headed to the beach, santa cruz specifically ...

we shot up some surfers, and some nesting butterflies, i'm sure steve will post some pitchas of them. tonight i'll share a few from the pier. all shots with my canon 1Ds Mark II, and 85 f/1.8 or 35 f/1.4 lens aboard. very little post required, just convert from raw, and curves adjustment. click on pics for exif.

Again you proved that you are a grea Master of composition. This is a basis of a photo and its not so easy to SEE the composition through the viewfinder. Partly its a talent - partly work, work, work and work....

    Momma and her kidds?
You've got 4 kids (the brown looking gulls) and one adult, the white and gray one!

It was a gorgeous day, glad you and Steve were able to be out and about on such a nice day.

Hmmm, what's with the shadow and the gull on the railing? Was that deliberate (Dee asking a D'uh question here).

Looking good Andy! I like the under pier shot with the couple in the top right.
Was there some lens flare or some other lighting aberration? Is that why you went to Black and White?
The reason I am asking is because seeing Steve's shot the light was very dynamic.
And I assume you shot at similar times.
    Just being an inquiring mind
    Thanks

    Tim

thanks for commenting, dee, it *was* a really nice day. the colors and the light were just great.

the shadow, is me, with a seagull head..... i shot it one-handed. yes, it was deliberate....

thanks for stopping by wave.gif and i always appreciate your comments... now to your question.. the color version of this shot is very similar in coloring to the shot steve posted. when i looked at the image on the lightbox, i immediately said, "black and white." why? the shadows are so strong... i wanted them to stand out. i so thoroughly enjoy black and white, it really moves me.

here's a shot in color from a few months ago (and another reason why i did this one in b&w):

    thanks again!

    Hey Andy,

That first shot is prime. Its one of the best B&W shots I've seen lately. The gull shots ain't bad either. I have to get you down to Florida so you can shoot some real birds though.

The first shot is very nice. The suns rays passing through the pier and the
couple on the far side come through nicely. How'd you get the gulls to line
    up so nicely?

I don't want to divulge Andy's techniques, but let me just say:
