How big can this be printed?

I THINK there is a thread around here that addresses this, but I must be searching the wrong key word(s)...
How large can a image file of 1MB be printed while still keeping high quality?
I'm not looking to go huge... but is there a rule of thumb?
Or point me to the thread and I'll read it...

Megabytes don't mean a lot in these situations.

We have minimums for resolution here: http://www.smugmug.com/help/print-quality#minprintres

But these are minimums. They will look better if you have a higher resolution.

Ivar's right - the amout of megabyte a photo has doesn't help you at all, because that amount is determined by the content of the photo - for example if there are many fine and detailed structures or more softer parts.
