Hi friends!

We found this war memorial on a walk, and thought it would provide a neat background for some pics. Totally unplanned. :)

The writing on the wall are names of killed soldiers that died for .... absolutely nothing. I hope you don't mind, but I think its about time that some life and happiness returns to places like that.

As always, all coments and tips are highly appreciated. :)

Nice photo's but I would like to see atleast one without the glasses. Having them in every photo leaves me wondering! I like the last one best. :)

    let me get understand...
So, you're taking an artistic photos of your good-looking girlfriend (playfully showing her shoulder etc.) against a 'nice' background of the memorial to fallen soldiers, right?

    What a brilliant idea!

May I suggest few other ideas to explore:

A funeral may serve as a nice lively backdrop.
A cemetery provides attractive background dominated by symmetrical shapes (thumb stones)
    A hospital would...

But I'll leave the rest of it for you...

Call me a hypocrite, call me artistically-challenged, whatever... - debating whether your good - looking GF looks best with or without glasses seems rather bizarre (to say the least), given the context...

Yes, you got that right. Its just a wall with names of people who died nearly 100 years ago. I don't have any respect for patriotism, war heros and the like. It is just stupid. They killed and died without any reason. How wicked!
Now we are the bad ones for bringing just a little happiness back into such a place?

    didn't realise it wasn't a WWII monument.

That's grand! Consider, however, that most 'war heroes and the like' were/are really young kids who never got to chose whether to go to war or not. The just got drafted... May I humbly recommend "Slaughterhouse V" by Kurt Vonnegut?

How wicked indeed [of their governments to send them to kill and die]... While we're at it - may I ask whether you would consider all the young people (soldiers) who died fighting against Nazi's to have "killed and died without any reason"?

Not bad ones, no... Just a bit... well... 'out of place' (in my book - it's all personal...) As for happiness - please - the more of it, the better (in that place too!) - really!

My original point was/is that using the war memorial as a backdrop for an impromptu 'glamour shoot' is a bit tasteless. All, IMHO - always IMHO...

Thank you! I must admit that in the heat of the argument, I haven't yet looked at yours. Going to do it now :)

I know, and this is one of the most disgusting facets of this madness. It seems like power brings out the worst sides of humans. (Many) soldiers turning to sadistic monsters, and 'leaders' sending them to die for their own personal goals.

But this does not take the responsibility from us.

This question is a little unfair, as it can not be answered right. :)
Yes, I find every victim in a war senseless, but of course this does not mean that I have any sympathy for anything that happened in this time.

Here in Austria (and Germany), we get bombarded with all kind of 'never forget' - memorial things. I just got tired of it many years ago.
The fact that we 'must never forget' shows that there has been no development, no 'evolution'. (I'm afraid I don't find the right wording here in English). If we must constantly remember, it shows that we would do the same things again, and have not learned a single thing. If we learned our lesson, we could just let the past rest and stop looking back.

And this is my message to all who think of themselves as highly respectful for all these men and women that died in all these wars, regardless of time and nationality:
We are not respectful. We spit on their graves, because if we, as humanity, had a little respect, we would learn from the past and would scrap all our shiny toys of destruction.

Haha, actually I feel well out of place in this society most of the time. :)

I'm sure you are not alone with your opinion. But at least it did start a good discussion! ;)

Ah, yes, and thank you for the recommendation regarding Kurt Vonnegut.
I have just read about him on Wikipedia. Sounds very interessting, I will get the book that you mentioned.
I love reading! I can be found without a camera, but never without a book. :)

    Andreas...
Since this whole discussion falls well outside photography, I'll stop here. If you ever feel like discussing anything - please feel free to drop me a line.

    Alex

PS very good glamour stuff in your gallery - enjoyed it.
