Okay, this didn't really bother me until very recently when it got even worse!!!
everytime I focus, it focuses rather quickly, but then that little dot appears in the bottom right hand corner and it's like it's thinking...then a few seconds later if you keep pressing the shutter, it takes. it happens almost EVERY shot with both of my lenses!

does anyone know what gives?

Does this happen with outdoor and indoor images?
Are the resulting images in focus?
Is it possible that the AF sensor is dirty?
Have you recently reformatted the CF card?
In what condition are the batteries?

    Is you're drive set to '2, 5 or 10 second' delay? :)

You say "it focuses rather quickly". What do you mean by that? Are some of the red AF lights lit, or are you just seeing a sharp image in the viewfinder? I ask because the only time the lower right dot flashes on my 30D is when the AF can't lock. In that case, it never fires until it does find a lock.ne_nau.gif

Going by my 20D (I'm assuming this part of hte 30D interface didn't change), if you are in single shot or AI mode the blinking dot in the lower right corner indicates NO focus and the shutter will not release. If you're in AI Servo mode the blinking dot indicates you're in focus and ready to shoot. Intuitive, no? headscratch.gif Anyway, I'm willing to bet that blinking dot is telling you AF cannot get a lock indicated by 1) the blinking dot and b) lack of a lit AF point.

My experience is also that of DJ-S1 above, and my manual states on page 80:

"Autofocus can fail to achieve focus (the focus confirmation light < ● > blinks) with certain subjects such as the following: ....
    ...
In such cases, do one of the following:
    (1) Focus an object at the same distance as the subject and lock the focus before recomposing.
    (2) Set the lens focus mode switch to <MF> and focus manually."
