Custom WB again, but this time I set it at the rink instead of at home. Let me know what you think about these.

    Really good ^5
The color is good and they are all sharp and crisp thumb.gif I like the 2nd one, I think, the slap shot pose. Looks like the custom wb worked out well for you clap.gif

    Thanks for sharing,

Your pics are getting better and better all the time.

Do you think maybe that there's a little to much contrast in the pics?
The lights are just short of being blow out, and the darks are black, at least
to me. Maybe try setting the in camera contrast down a notch and just
try a couple of pics like that your next time out. I think with a little
more definition in the lights and darks, you'll have it.

What is this guy screaming about?

I don't belive ie was saying anything, I think (atleast) he was getting ready for the face off.

I'll try the contrast next time around.

The first one the crop seems a little tight on his pads, is there are reason you cropped it that close.
I LOVE the face on the 2nd one....I know I keep saying faces faces faces, but just think about if you are going to do that trading card set, no one wants to see and ass....they want to see faces, they want to see emotion. You can see the aggression on this guys face as he tries to win the face off.

I also like the 3rd one with the goalie and the poke check save.....

Unfortuantly (and this is where I need help) I can compose shots but alot of times I have a hard time with the post production (or my belief that there should be very little) I try to get it right in the camera the first time but it does seem like the darker colors in these photos are sort of bleeding, if that makes sense? Yeah but this is all starting to get into an area I dont know much about.

    But yeah to the faces!!!!

An extreme example of faces, but this is during a face off where after he wins it he ties up the other center.....would be great for a trading card photo (wink wink nudge nudge)

http://jdsphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/396010/1/15789525/Large ( i like where you are going with this, even better if you catch them mid laugh as they are chating before the puck drop)

http://jdsphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/396010/1/15789634/Large ( i like the idea, even better if you can see play out foucs in the background of the pictures)
Damn now I put this all here and I cant remeber what all of them were. But these were all the shots I either liked, or thought had the most potential. Like when the guys come back to the bench to celebrate a goal. There was one of them that you could see the glove in the bottom left and the boys skating by and giving pounds. Now the photo itself needs work, but the idea is great, it tells the story it draws the viewer in and it makes them feel like they were on the bench.
Same reason why I liked the two where you were short of shooting over the shoulders of 2 different players. The one where he is looking back and you see his eye.....for a second you sort of feel like the coach and the player is watching the game but listening to his coaches instruction at the same time.

There were a couple where you had great shots of peoples faces as the were tying up the other center at the face off dot, and the fight ones have good potential, nice and tight, like you are the linesman coming in to break it up.

I know sometimes you are just going to be in the wrong sport for a photo.
I have a great example of this from saturday.
Here is a photo I took of two players kind of trying to keep each other out of play:
http://winger.smugmug.com/gallery/397040/5/15834643 (smugmug is being silly so I will have to put the link and the gallery isnt finished being edited, so dont mind that some of the photos are not quite right yet)

    DSC1272.jpg

But my friend was in a much better postion....I love this photo.
I have another example from this game too but smugmug is being weird right now (The first one i was in the box and he was in the corner, then the 2nd period that switched)

You almost have to think about yourself as a story teller and I know there is so much i need to learn, but at least that is one thing I have down. As I learn to manipulate the camera and it settings better, I can tell my stories better.
Maybe its not always the right story I mean you can compare:
This is my friend Josh's story of the game: http://pubpages.unh.edu/~jdgibney/hockey/photos/021205/
    And here is mine:
http://umassathletics.collegesports.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/021205aaa.html (not one of my better galliers, but the boys didnt give me much to shoot for)
(My friend josh as been shooting hockey for I think maybe 4-5 years where i am still in my first year with the whole SLR thingy)

It was just a mistake on my part, didn't mean to get it that close.

I think this may be caused by to much contrast, I'm going to try something alittle different next time.

Yea, when it comes time to do that, not sure how it will be setup if they want actions shots, or just poses, but either way I'll try to get their faces from now on.

I think I need another camera to keep with me, and slap my 50 1.8 on it so when they score and come back to the bench I can grab the shots of them slapping hands, etc.

He was actually talking trash to the guy he just beat down on the ice in the other penlty box.

Yea with me shooting in the penlty box its gonna be hard to capture shots of the other side if they decide to do something.

HAHA that is funny, i usually try to get them while they are still talking trash on the way to the box (cause one player usually does, he loves causing trouble)

You can always just do a period or two in the PB and then maybe use the other periods to wander around.

I am just at the point in the season where I have 16 GB worth of photos so im just looking for different stuff, and i didnt start shoot from the box until recently and i only get a period, so not as much stuff. Sometimes you get a great sight line of the goal and goals, sometimes the dang players get in the way.....

Yea I noticed that, but what can you do. I can shoot from above, below, etc. I may try moving around next time.
