Any of these evoke sorrow? Or should I try again?

Forlorn... #2. <-- that's my pick. As soon as I looked at it my heart sank.

    #1 reflects attitude, not sorrow.
#3 reflects a sort of manufactured sorrow...
#2 has a genuine nature to it...

#2 is the most genuine-looking. The focus is rather soft, though. If you tried a reshoot you'll never exactly replicate what you've already captured so I'm wondering if there's anything you can try in Photoshop where you either sharpen it, or possibly fool around with adding some grain to it.

i like your third one. what a beautiful face. kinda reminds me of a face you would see in an oil painting from one of the old "masters".

My vote would be for #2, though I wouldn't call it forlorn (dictionary: sad and abandoned or lonely). Looks like she has connected to some real grief about something.

Since we all seem to be thinking #2 was the real thing, can you tell us if we're correct here?

I agree that sharpening might help the image, and you might try applying it only to a selected area, like the eye area (brows, lashes, and maybe the small wrinkles above the brow).

    Good luck!

I too like #2, but even though happy/sad expressions fit the theme, I really believe they need a context to bring the entire image together. Just my 2c.

Thanks for all the comments. It is greatly appreciated. I agree, #1 is not a contender. #2 is the most genuine/unposed image. #3 is my favorite, but may not be the strongest image for the theme. Here's my attemp at sharpening #2--without (hopefully) over doing it. I also changed the title. And, yes, the emotion behind the image is real.
