Flower

When I buy a new lens, I go to the local zoo/conservatory to take pics.
This is one them.

D rebel
Sigma 80-400 OS
Date 02/11/05
Shutter 1/640
Aperture F8.0
ISO 400
E.C. +1/3
After resizing, I applied a slight USM to bring back the sharpness.

    Thanks Dan.
I agree, the lighting is the whole story for this one.
I was just lucky to be there at this time for the shadows and highlights to
    end up this way.

A+ for this one, this flower is like a person with charisma, you're totally drawn to it. Wow, what a great shot! Definitely challenge worthy clap.gifclap.gif

I like the picture ..Pleasant and nice. My eye is drawn away from the flower to the flower in front left. If it was behind the subject flower and just out of focus, like the others, it would not stand out so much. The overall picture would be stronger.

    Thanks for your comments.

I did the best I could with what I had. These flowers are in a conservatory.
The folks working there don't mind you looking, but they really don't like you
touching. The reason I took this photo was for the lighting on the centered
flower. If I could photoshop the pic, I could darken or blur that flower. But
for me, it isn't much of a distraction because it's darker than the main subject. (for the most part)

    Thanks again.

Davey, I understand that you couldn't move that flower. However, be aware in the future when you can compose the image the way you want, of things that lead your eye away from the main subject. In this case you see the wonderfully lit flower. And, then where does you eye go to. The outside of the frame. There are many little things like that you need to be aware of for a great picture. Photoshop will help improve the image as you mentioned. Try it and see if it is not a stronger picture... I bet it is!!

I agree with you. I was just trying to explain where and how I got this pic.
I'm sorry if I "sounded", I don't know, angry or cross in that last post.
Creative writing isn't what I do best.

If this were a challenge where photoshopping was aloud, yes I would have
done something with that flower. I have the same pic in the sony forum
challenge right now. It's the same (mostly) untouched photo. I hate to
say this, but I guess I pretty much have tunnel vision. I know that I'm
supposed to look at the well lit flower, so I do, then I move on. I realize
that others look into photos for more meaning, I guess I'm just not one
of them. And you're right, I do need to keep that in mind. This will
be a hard habit to brake.

I was more concerned with fitting that one flower into the frame, than with
what was around it. You are right, I should notice more of what I'm doing.

So I did a little burning in photoshop. What do think?

    The one I entered.

    Hi, davev

I think this is a very nice shot. thumb.gif

The light just pulls me in to the flower. Did you just walk up and take

the shot? Did you use a tripod?

    Good Luck in the contest,

    Chuck

    Hey Chuck, thanks.

The shot was taken in the Como Park Conservatory. I sat on a bench, looking
around at the flowers, and the fountain, and the 20 or people wandering
through. As I was looking for a picture to take, the sun peeked out and
lit up this flower. No tripod was used during this picture.

The image is better. And you are exactley right about concentrating on the entire picture. You have to "see" everything. You remember the experience of taking the picture. Viewers do not, and look at it differently than you. Good luck in the future!
