I can use some honest opinions here. I have the shot I have taken on Canadian geese and goslings. I worked it up in both color and bw and need an opinion on which is better (if either).

Here is the color shot...

and here is the BW

As always, C&C always appreciated.

Black and White takes away from the baby ducklings in the way you did it up. I would say that the first one is the best. Had the ducks been more centered, and had you been near the same level as them, this shot would have been perfect.
I agree that the open space in the top left takes away from the feel.

Thanks for the opinions. I started to think about the crop myself because of the open space. I liked the position but I agree too much open space.

Here is an attempt at a crop.

I like the crop and color much better but does it seem overly sharpened? Perhaps it is just my monitor though. Did you apply some USM?

Yes I did but maybe I overdid a tad. I did the sharpening before I cropped this time so I might be showing up more as it's expanded. I'll look that over.

The crop is AWESOME. I remember reading some photo tips somewhere and the author expressed that closer is better.
With what you have as far as position, it is pretty much as good as it will get with the cropping.
I can't comment to hard on the color, because I am on an crap HP laptop, but if you did sharpen it, it doesn't interfere much with the veiw I have.

Overall to me it is a decent picture.

I like the square composition much better. It's much more interesting and easier to view the subjects. I prefer the color in this shot.

Thanks for the comments. I was probably 15' away and that was about as close as I was going to be allowed. I'm fairly sure that is the male standing at the back and he was definately watching me closely. Any closer and he was going to move everybody.
