Segovia, Spain: Aqueduct and Alcázar

Segovia is a small town about 90 kilometers north of Madrid. It has a perfectly preserved Roman aqueduct that has to be seen to be believed:

It's other main claim to fame is the Alcázar. Originally built by the Moors about 1000 years ago, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current version is just over 100 years old and looks more Germanic than Spanish or Moorish. It was used as the set of the movie Camelot and is said to be the model for the Disney castle in Cinderella:

It is a popular destination as a day trip from Madrid, but is not completely overrun with tourists:

Many more pics in this Smugmug gallery.

Thanks for looking. C&C always welcome.

Segovia has long been on my must-see list if I ever travel to Espana!

All are wonderful, love the muted colors of the area. The last one is quite special. The juxtaposition of the creamy pastoral colors, scenery and the man clad in a tuxedo make for a memorable image. Well done.

thanks for sharing, I'm off to check out the entire gallery!

That aquaduct is pretty sensational. Your pics really bring out the texture of the blockwork - it looks almost as if it is dry-jointed with no cement. Quite stunning, especially as it has been standing for so long.

I'd be interested in some more intriguing angles of the aquaduct e.g. vertically upwards etc.

Beautiful set of pictures. I particularly like the second one where you shoot through the aqueduct and see the colorful buildings beyond.

Very nice series, Richard. Such beautiful lighting and soft tones. Some very nice shots of the castle in your gallery as well. Those turrets are awesome!

Many thanks. Segovia is my favorite of the Castillian walled cities near Madrid. It has been ruined by tourism less than Toledo and is more interesting than Avila. By all means, check it out if you come to Spain. It is an easy day trip from Madrid.

Thanks, Tobers. thumb.gif You are correct--no cement. Pretty amazing engineering. There are some more views of the aqueduct in this Smugmug Gallery, though nothing vertical. Guess I'll have to go back. :D

    Lovley series of images.

Now I need to work on my tourist vocabulary.

Spain looks like a wonderful place to see and photograph. The aqueduct and the Alczar are fascinating.

When I was in 9th grade, I went to Segovia - with the Spanish club. I'll never forget the trip, because I was the only boy and there were 12 girls :saurora lol3.gif

Somewhere, in shoeboxes in a closet, I have an olde album with similar shots. clap.gif thanks for the memories iloveyou.gif

I love the last shot! It looks great as is, or would be a good candidate for a B&W conversion.

Great shots. I have been there and actually sat on top of that aquaduct. I'll have to scan the pics and show you one day. Segovia and the castle are just beautiful!

Beautiful photos - I'm glad you didn't try to oversaturate them, I love the muted colors. My fave is also the 2nd photo, how you can see the town through the arches...just beautiful! It is now on my list of (many!) places that I would like to visit some day.
