New MBP Display - Color Banding in Gradients correctable?

Hello!

I just recieved my new MBP (the one with the new LED Display)
and noticed that I have color clipping and strong banding in all
dialogboxes where I can select a color (for example in PS).

I made a photo of my screen that shows the problem.
As you can see in the attached image there is clipping of red
and blue in the corners as well as a strong band in the green
color area.

Edit: The Gradient Test was carried out using LCDTest (free)
from here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23237

I would like to know if this type of color problems can be
fixed by profiling the monitor with a colorimeter or if it is
a hardware defect.

At the moment I'm still in the 14 days return policy so I
could still ask for a replacement from Apple.

    Just an uneducated guess, but I don't think banding is a problem that can be fixed if you profile the screen...

    I'd have apple replace it. Things should just work when you get them.

    Yes thats very interesting, finaly a person that has a new
    mbp and a colorimeter. I wrote him a mail and will report back
    what he has to say about the banding after calibration. Thanks!

    Update:

    I got a colorimeter (Spyder2) while I was waiting
    for an exchange mbp from Apple. Today the new
    mbp arrived and I made the calibration test myself.
    The good news is that the line through Gradient issue
    almost dissapears! And is not visible anymore in ps
    color selection dialogs. I can very much live with that :D

    The bad news is that my new mbp has a very obvious
    uneven elumination on the bottom and right side
    of the screen (there is an ugly hotspot just above the
    mbp logo too) so I'm returning the thing for the 2nd time.

    Update:

    I tried the ColorEyesDisplay Pro demo
    with my Spyder2 on the mbp and got
    really nice results with all deltas below 0.8
    and a line-free (smooth) gradient. Minimal
    clipping in the red and blue highlights is
    still present, but that seems to be the
    limitation of the 6bit laptop display.

    Does anyone other than me actualy read this? :D

    Hey. No one alerted me! :D

    I just found this thread, for some reason. Interesting and disappointing to hear about your troubles with the new displays. I was very hopeful that they would be a big improvement over the LCD displays, what with all of LCD's faults.

    FWIW, Rob Galbraith has just tested the LED-backlit MacBook Pro screens, in terms of color.

    His verdict is that it's "very, very good" and the best gamut he's seen...in a laptop screen, anyway. iMac screen still blows it away, but by less than earlier laptop screens.

    That sounds very good. Without
    color calibration the first shiped mbp's
    had a horrible default color profile. It
    seems that apple has adressed the issue
    with recent software updates. Apple
    is using two different panels from two
    different manufacturers in the new mbp
    btw. Possible that this was (is?) a source
    of the differences people are getting
    with their displays?!

    That was a good read thanks!

    Anyone care to share battery life on the MBP LED models? I will be in good shape to order one by the end of the month, but I have no idea what to expect for bat life...

    Just a quick update:

    I tried the settings the article recommends
    but with Luminance set to Maximum (120cd
    was too dull for me):

    > Gamma 2.2
    > Color Temperature 6000K
    > Luminance Maximum

    The result is an even smoother gradient without
    clipping and very accurate colors (all deltas below 0.8).

    I am very happy with this now (and excitet, can u tell?)
    and would trust the display to be accurate enough to
    edit for printing. This is what I'm going to try out next mwink.gif

    Apple did not give much info on this update, but maybe it will help, if it is for your model?
    MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.3

    This EFI Firmware update fixes a display issue on 2.2/2.4GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro models.

    This update requires MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0
