The year I bought my TV....

The year I bought my TV, Jim Bakker was defrocked, Ronald Reagan challenged Mikhail Gorbechev to tear down the Berlin Wall, and Klaus Barbie was sentenced to life.

That was 20 years ago. And finally, yesterday, another great moment in history.

I replaced that TV with a 42" plasma HDTV.

Wow.

:clap

Congratulations, David! Care to share the specifics? I haven't lasted quite as long as you... but I'm getting ready.

    Panasonic TH-42PX75U

I did next to no research, so don't tell me everything wrong with it. :D

It was about $1300 at Best Buy.

Great to see the prices finally coming down to something on the same planet as reasonable.

Congrats!! We made the switch to a similar TV this winter, and I'm SO glad we did. I hate watching non-HD channels now!

    Oh
Congrats! Please don't tell us that you let your photo equipment get similarly outdated. :D

Ahhhhh...plasma. I was so happy to sell my 36" Sony CRT last year and replace it with the love of my life (don't tell my wife and son)...a Pioneer 50" plasma. Coupled with HD DirecTV and TiVO, there is little reason to leave the house! Well, I guess I still have to work to pay for DirecTV and NetFlix.

Enjoy. There's nothing like a shiny new set these days. Great price too.

Dang, I need to keep my mouth shut. Just got this email at work.
Media train wreck du jour, Paris Hilton will be on Larry King tomorrow evening (that's Wednesday, June 27th).

Building management is attempting to get a permit to blockade the alley to prevent paparazzi from crowding the back entrance. In the event that a blockade is approved, there will be two security guards on either end. BLT employees and visitors will be permitted to enter and park in the structure, as usual.

Whether the alley is blocked or not, building access will be limited, so if you're expecting any clients, vendors, or guests, please let me know. I'll provide security with a list of approved visitors. Anyone who tells security they are visiting BLT should be admitted, regardless, but I'd like to take whatever measures we can to make sure that no clients get caught in the mêlée.

I've just heard, Paul McCartney will be playing a private show at Amoeba the same evening. Expect traffic to be an issue, as well.

When I looked up on Wikipedia what happened the year I bought my TV, the thing that jumped out the most was that Tonya Harding had her boyfriend whack Nancy Kerrigan's leg.

I think it's time for a new TV.

After I pay off that last lens...rolleyes1.gif

So, Paris is in the building, and it's a friggin' circus out there with cops and crowds.

Our building is under construction, and the lobby is all torn up, so the security guards were spraying banana scented air freshener for Paris, to make her more welcome. rolleyes1.gif

Add to that, Sir Paul Mcartney across the street making an appearance at Amoeba Music, and it's just nuts here.

Hope you enjoy it. I was considering a similar purchase and then I asked myself "what's on TV that you want to watch". There was a dead silence for around an hour and I decided against it.

Anything we watch on that TV must be carried to it. IOW: no cable, no satellite, no broadcast. DVD or the occasional VHS, and that's it. I haven't had "TV" for about 7 years or more.

Similar here. Who cares about broadcast TV. One of the reasons I want a nice big screen is so that photography slide shows in the living room can be a decent size. Especially verticals, which are shortchanged by widescreen monitors.

That's my problem, if I put on a slide show of my shots I would go broke paying folks to come in and watch it. There aren't many movies I want to see a second time. If they were any good I would have paid to see them on a really big screen the first time. I have lots of DVDs of movies that I don't watch. I just don't feel like giving up 2 hours to re-screen something I saw already.

If I bought a huge screen thingie it would dominate a room and I don't want to surrender a room to it. My family room is big enough but that's where we sit down and talk to friends and visitors. If we want some entertainment I start up the jukebox.

When I have free time I usually prefer to read a book.
