Shipping and Billing differences

I tried this for the first time today so I guess I could just wait and see, but I'll ask just to get the answer more quickly.

Where I am there are a lot of people around here who don't own computers. I guess they feel that it's just a passing fad. Anyway, today a woman came in and wanted a copy of a photo I ran in my newspaper and she said she didn't own a computer. Instead of hunting it down on my computer I just pulled up my Smugmug site and surfed right to it. This also saves me the time of having to make two trips to Wal-Mart for a 20 cent print.

She only wanted a 4x6 so I cropped and ordered one. I billed my credit card and shipped it to her address and she just paid me. I guess I technically could have asked for a credit/debit card and logged out and ordered it for her, but either way.

My question is if the shipping address and the billing address aren't the same, is that cool?

The reason I ask is that I've dealt with another company where the shipping and billing had to be the same for obvious reasons of theft. I'm not sure if the company I was dealing with had that policy or the credit card company.

That's awesome. I will probably do this a lot because, as I said, there are a lot of people around here that either don't have computers or are the type of people that would rather die than learn how to find something on the internet.

No, the addresses don't have to match. I do the exact same thing all the time. Something else that is really good about this is the customer receiving the prints doesn't get a packing slip or invoice, so they never see the real price that you paid. mwink.gif

The biggest problem I ran into in the beginning is the proof delay. Remember, when you order it while logged in and you have the proof delay set to five days, it will be five days before that order is processed.

You don't want to use her credit card to order because then she will know how much you paid for it, not what you charged.

I wouldn't have done that. I meant I would have logged out of SM then used the customers credit card and placed the order with the customer paying full SM price.

I would just be filling out the forms online for them like they would if they would jump into the 20th century and buy a computer.

Usually depending on the $ amount of the order some online vendors won't ship to a different address than that of the credit card unless that address is put as a secondary address or proof that you live at that address. I have encountered issues with this. It is good that company do have this in place to keep someone for getting your credit card info and then buying a ton of stuff and shipping it to another address.

Since I use a P.O. Box that I have had for at least 10 years, for all my banking and all important info, when I have a company that only ships UPS, a few times I have had to provide a copy of a utility bill, to show that it was a legitimate address of mine.

Orders online of high dollar amounts from first time customers usually get more scrutiny.
"A photo is like a hamburger. You can get one from McDonalds for $1, one from Chili's for $5, or one from Ruth's Chris for $15. You usually get what you pay for, but don't expect a Ruth's Chris burger at a McDonalds price, if you want that, go cook it yourself." - me
