Saw this BCNH flying past and shot at him. Thought he had a Frog at first, but couldn't see no front legs. After the burst, I chimped and saw the poor baby Mallard. :( I had no idea they ate birds as well. Learn something new everyday.

What I think happened was the BCNH was standing there waiting for a fish, when Momma Mallard and her brood swam up to him. He seized the opportunity and grabbed one.

    very nice capture!
I was at a refuge today shooting Mallard chicks (just posted one). I was told to hurry before the BCNHs ate them all. Also saw Woody with chicks as well.

Where do baby ducks come from? We know it's not evolution, at least not until the next U.S. election. Maybe the night heron is like The Stork for ducks.

Such a hard to get shot but very sad all the same for the duckling. Its odd that the duckling is looking at ahead as if its in flight itself..its clearly alive.

BCNH's do that - they think chicks are on the menu just for them - a duckling swimming by or an egret or spoonie youngin' who falls (or is shoved) out of the nest are all fair game.
