109 galleries and counting... front page too large

One thing I love about SmugMug is that I don't have to pay for my gallery space. I don't know of another service that offers that.
As a result, I still make sales from stuff I shot months ago.
However, my front page is getting kinda large, and is sometimes slow to load. A couple of questions about that:
1. Is there a way I can break this up--say, no more than 5 galleries to a page, but with an obvious "next page" arrow at the bottom?
2. Does it help with load time if I have selected a featured photo for each gallery? Or... is there any other way to shorten the load time? It's not that bad really; I think it just bogs down when the site is getting lots of traffic.
Thanks!

I'd be thinking not merely in terms of categories, as suggested by Ivar, but about sub-categories. The good news is they are dead-easy to use!
