I finally found one feeding that let me get close -first time in a two seasons shooting at the lake...

All Canon gear: Xti (shutter priority 1/200, ISO 100) + 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter. MT-24EX macro flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -2 FEC.

I changed positions for this one to get the dirt bike path in the background so the wings would stand out.

All Canon gear: Xti (manual mode F16, 1/200, ISO 100) + 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter for about 1.375 times life size. MT-24 macro flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC.

All Canon gear: Xti (manual mode F16, 1/200, ISO 100) + 62mm of extension tubes+ 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter for about 2.75 times life size. MT-24EX macro flash set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC.

After taking those shots Mark Plonsky gave me a few pointers on using the MT-24EX -and also got me to thinking outside the box on how I was placing the flash heads and using ratio control. The next set won't have the flash reflections that the macros in this set have... :wink

Mark is always saying things like "That's a nice shot, but you could have gotten closer." like he's daring me to do something :D

Could you imagine how cool (or creepy, I suppose) the world would be if we came equipped with a set of eyes like these? Thanks for sharing these shots. #1 is my favorite.

Someone on Flickr IDed this one for me. I thought it might not be a black tailed skimmer since they are larger and the tip of the tail is black. But they look so similar I thought this one just wasn't mature...
