Blue Heron in deep water

Hi,

This is the first time I ever saw a Blue Heron land in deep water. It landed, stayed there for a few then took off again right toward me. When it landed it kept shaking off the water like a little puppy dog.

I included the ones I shot through the reeds to show how well the new Mark III tracks. This camera will hold focus in just about any situation.

Hope these aren't to big or to many. I looked and there didn't seem to be any guidelines on number of shots..

That is amazing Chris! I have never seen a heron in deep water before...what a fabulous capture. I am constantly amazed at the caliber of photos there are on this site.I have so very much to learn!

    Wonderful photographs.

If might be a juvie from this year - chest feathers are not very long, so it may not have had sufficient time to "read and learn" water depth yet.

Great shots however - I like them

    Hi Gonzo & EmmaLou,

Thanks for the reply. Gonzo, I wondered that too but the first shot shows him(her) with the legs down then the second shows it coming in and pulling his legs up under himself. The third shows it landing like a duck. He stayed there for a bit then took off, had a heck of a time getting back out of the water. I thought he was going to wade over to shore but he flew instead.

I've shot hundreds of Blue Heron around here and never saw one do this before. Not a big deal, it was just interesting to watch.. and then to struggle to take off like he did. It was 95 degrees that day and late in the afternoon, maybe he just wanted to cool off. I know I was burnin up.

    Thanks again.

    Squirl003,

Not as surprised as I was. I was ready to dive in and drag him to shore. As you can see from the photos there is a lot of algae in the water. He moved around a bit but since he didn't stand up I knew he wasn't touching the bottom.
