Popular photos questions

I just noticed the (new?) "Popular" option for the home page. I turned it on, and I also tried to set it to show 12 or 24 pictures. However, though it seems to accept my request, it won't show any more than 6.

Are popular photos ranked only by people who have given pictures a thumbs-up? Or (as I had assumed) by popularity of viewing?

Can certain (still public) galleries be excluded from the popular section? (I have a gallery of sample photos from a new camera which appear as my "popular" pictures but they're not really that interesting and I'd prefer to exclude them.)

Actually, what I'd really like is a list that is dynamically generated based on all of the pictures the _viewer_ is allowed to see (based on the fact that they may have the cookie for, or have entered the magic password to enable them to see family pictures), minus the "excluded" galleries (as noted above)...

Anyway, I'm a bit stumped why I can't get more than six pictures to show for the time being. I tried reloading, and also tried a different browser where I wasn't even logged into my smugmug account. I see the same six pictures in each browser. Perhaps that simply means that (purely coincidentally) only six of my (publicly viewable) pictures have ever been given a thumbs-up... (which is entirely possible)

    yes, it's a gallery setting (photorank=no).

    The photos in your private, passworded galleries won't show on your popular page.

    Well, I see that I can turn photorank off in gallery settings, and the pics disappear from the "popular" page. I also "discovered" gallery stats (in a gallery popup somewhere) which suggests that a lot more than 6 pictures have "thumbs". Am I to assume that the others have zero or negative total rank? Am I missing some other place where I can see exactly WHAT their rank is? Or is that a secret? :-) Otherwise, I'm still stumped as to why so many pictures are ranked and yet only six show up on my "popular" page. It seemed as if they were just the six "most" popular... but perhaps they're the only six with positive scores. ;-)

    Fortunately these were just some quick sample shots I wanted to share with folks back when the camera was brand new and people were asking for samples, as opposed to anything I was intending to enter into any sort of "popularity" contest. But this whole thing just made me want to know a little more about how it all works.

    Popular photos are different on different PC's
    Anyone know why the 15 popular thumnails are different from PC to PC? Can this be reset to zero for entire site? Any tips or tricks that would help?

    Are you logged in on one of the pc's? It's been noted a difference logged in
    versus logged off.

    Yes...I noticed the popular photos are different when I am logged into both, home or work.

    Hi, can't replicate - can you tell us if you are sure you are logged in on both browsers as owner?

    I can't reproduce this specific problem, but I do see different popular photos when comparing Firefox logged in and IE not logged in, so there is some variability in what popular photos shows somewhere.

    Entirely possible - depending on SmugIslands settings. This is not browser specific, rather logged-in or logged-out specific :)

    Can you explain how the smugisland settings interact with popular photos? I wouldn't have expected that setting a smugisland setting would prevent photos from showing in the popular photos display on my own home page.

    Photos 1-11 are the same. Photos 12 and 13 show in opposite order. Photos 14-18 are completely different. I checked the first few that were different and didn't find any galleries with SmugIsland settings set to "no".
