Family Medicine graduation this past weekend
My plan was to pull out my 50mm & 580EX as a guest and get some low light indoor practice with it somewhere other than my home.
Well, their photog pulled out at the last minute and after a few minutes painfully watching the MC take on the extra duty with a P & S, my wife asked if they needed me to be the official photog instead. :yikes Of course she said sure and they would pay :eek1 and we were already into the ceremony so I had to get it together quick!
I dropped back and started with my 70-200 because that's what was on my camera at the time, and my wife went about her business (oh you volunteer me? Then I volunteer you to be my assistant!). I switched lenses and got in closer for the last half of the ceremony. It went okay after I shook the initial nervousness. I went w/ the 28-135 instead of the 50mm. I'm nervous that the 50 will hunt too much in low light even with the 580EX on and now is not the time to figure that out. It took away my ability to play with DOF though. I could have done much better had this been planned in advance especially with the group shots. I was hampered the whole time by tables and also the walls were mirrored all around. Fortunately the ceiling was low and a light color and I was pleased with the bounce flash w/ the Gary Fong on as opposed to off. I also learned the importance of using flash exposure lock to get proper exposure and how it shortens recycle time by not firing at full power. This is the kind of experience I was hoping to get with my flash.
And a comment about the XTI's LCD and Histogram. I've turned my XTi LCD down to the middle tick in brightness to match my monitor. The histogram didn't lie, but the LCD did. Picture number 16 was 2 stops underexposed but it looked fine in my LCD.

As the MC announces she needs all the graduates and award winners to gather for a shot, I lift up the camera to get a shot of her and everyone gets a good laugh as she strikes a pose.

There was a paparazzi type P&S frenzy to get that shot after we got them on stage and one of the ladies would not get her POS from in front of me as I politely asked her to excuse me until my wife and the MC came over and got loud. I took about 10-15 shots and this was the best one with most eyes open.

Excellent work, expecially considering the extremely short notice!
Congrats!

I'm assuming you're talking about the 1.8 50mm... Just as a side note, when I upgraded to the 1.4, my number of missed focusses (sp?) went WAY down. i LOVE my 1.4. I LOVED my 1.8, but I got so frustrated during a venue like yours when it needed bot be fast....
Anyway, #8 and 11 are my faves, but they are all great! Wonderful job!

Yes the 1.8 "nifty" as I see it called. But I just couldn't afford the 1.4 (yet). :cry
I more than ever want to replace my 50 and 28-135 with the 50 1.4 and the 24-70 2.8.
I was so torn between keeping it and taking it back because of how it hunts but I was impressed with the pictures it took. When I say hunt I mean it goes back and forth over the target... repeatedly. My 50 even misses sometimes in good light and contrast and I find myself saying well how could it miss that!? But the sharpness and bokeh are undeniable for the price. It probably would have been fine with the 580 assisting, but the situation went from wanting to get practice to having to get shots. My 28-135 doesn't miss much.
