Shot at the same location that I took the drone hoverfly shots, and like the fly this bee was feeding so it put up with me. Getting close is a simple matter of technique -and not the gear that you use...
All Canon gear: Xti (manual mode F16, 1/200, ISO 200) + MPE-65mm macro lens. MT-24EX set to -1/3 FEC with homemade diffusers. All images are at twice life size.

But you need the right gear to be able to focus on anything that close .
Would prefer slightly more detail (bigger aperture) but do like the shots.

Like what, auto focus?!
Not possible to do a focus stack on the bees my friend -they were constantly in motion. I'm stunned that I got anything useful and probably should have been shooting between 1/2 and 1x...
