Domain name question

I have a friend who told me she lost her domain name to her host (I can't remember who she said it was- I was thinking it was called digipics- but can't be because I can't find that in a search!).

Anyway, she had a domain name, signed up w/ a site like Smugmug to use as a business tool but was unhappy with the quility of the photos and some other tacked on fees, so when her yearly renewal came she decided to cancel. Well, somehow they were able to keep her domain name -that according to her she owned before she signed up with them. My question for you guys is- is there any risk of this happening with Smugmug?

She thinks she signed the rights over to them and lost the use of it when she canceled?? I want to give Smugmug a try but don't want to loose my newly purchased domain name!

Thanks

Hi, we don't own or have rights to your domain names, e.g., www.yourdomain.com

when you sign up with SmugMug, and for as long as you subscribe, you can have as your own: http://nickname.smugmug.com where nickname is your unique name.

With pro accounts, you can tie a custom domain to your SmugMug site.

So: http://www.ivarborst.com is the same as
    http://ivar.smugmug.com

    OK?
