Common loon and chicks
I had a chance to use my kayak with my wife and friends Tuesday. We went to a lake and enjoyed finding a pair of loons with a pair of chicks. What really got interesting was when another male showed up. There was a big fight to drive it away - by both parents.
If you know loons then you know they need a lot of open water to get a running start before they can get airborne. It was a funny sight to watch each loon trying to get into the air and be higher than its adversary. The action, unfortunately, was too far away to bother trying to photograph - it lasted almost a half hour before the odd male was driven off.
Here are 3 of the shots I was able to take.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thanks Dick, Harry, Marina, and Troy. I enjoy watching loons throughout hte year. During the fight to drive off the odd male, both parents left the two checks and perhaps went a good 1/2 mile away for 15 + minutes. I had not seen that before.
