What is it?

Folks, tonight my wife called me outside to check what she thought was a baby hummingbird. On closer inspection though, I saw what apppeared to be some sort of insect shaped similar to a humming bird but only about an inch or so long. I ran back inside to get the camera but it was gone when I came out. Does anyone have an idea of what I saw?

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

It was likely a "hummingbird moth". Look up Sphinx or Hawk moths to get a better idea of what they look like. But you are right, when their wings are going, they look just like little, inch long hummingbirds and are easily mistaken.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I looked at a lot of images of hummingbird moths on the net and none looked like this little fellow. I'll try to get a photo of it and post.
