Always a good chance they will return in a month or so knowing the possiblity that you will replace your gear with insurance funds. Rats! I hope they catch the jerks!
Hi Saurora,
Yes, I've been thinking about that as well. That's the worse part of this whole ordeal. My apartment no longer feels like a home. It feels like I'm living in a hotel, constantly on my guard. When I'm at work I dread the thought of going home. This sucks to no end.
EDIT: You'll have a Canon 1D Mark II sometime next week, Dan. PM me with your phone #, and mailing address. It's all done.
Umm, yeah, that reminds me, errr, I was, like, robbed and stuff, and they
took my, ummm, 1Ds Mark II, 600mm/f4 IS USM and 16-35/f2.8L II, and
my car and stuff. I'm just sayin'. :patch
Thank you very much for the offer, but I don't want to take on any more gear until I've found a way to keep it safe, especially if it's someone's personal equipment. Besides, it might be weeks before I settle with the insurance company, and there's always the chance that the lens might get damaged in shipping. Thanks again for the offer.
A weeks-long time frame was understood before the offer was made.
I can appreciate your reluctance to accept gear - however, the offer still stands. So, as and when you get things locked down to your satisfaction, let me know and we'll work the shipping.
Really sorry to hear of your misfortune.....very impressed that SM/Dgrin/Andy step up to help get ya shooting againthumb
As for the security of the new items........here is a low cost solution: A budget gun safe (now I am not talking a 1000lb browning safe that is fire proof for upto 5-10 hours)..I am talking about going to your nearest gander mtn or sportmans warehouse and spending less than 200 dollars on a 15 gun safe.....some of them already have 4 shelving strips that take the little clips under each shelf....if not then another $20 or so will do the shelving for cameras and lenses to sit on and bags or backpacks in the bottom.....head off to wally world and get a video camera and mount it on an inside wall covering the room so that the door and any windows are visible to that camera (the camera with reciever and a cheapo vcr will run you less than $150 or in that vicinity sine I don't know where you are living......now that light weight inexpensive gun sae will have 2 to 4 holes in the back of it and should also have at least 2- 3 inch lag bolts (toss the bolts) get at least 4 4-6" lagbolts (the longer the better) and bolt that baby to some studs.....now unless they come with crowbars and large hammers they are going to move it....it the camera room has a closet, even better...put the safe in the closet but still bolt it to studes in the wall and I would even bolt it thru the bottom to the floor.......but an inexpensive video camera to a vcr wil be of great help to the police should anything like this happen again....if you have a really good grapics card in your computer and can hook the reciever of the camera to the computer and then to an external harddrive that would even be better yet.
Now if you have an extra 2-3 K just laying around then go for the Browning 15 - 20 gun safe....they are very well lined will withstand a lot of heat (in case of a house fire) and as for someone breaking into them...well if you try to drill the tumbler or the handle...the vibration from the drill can set off the acuators and cause all the pins to pop into place, then it is a call to the one and only locksmith that can come and get you back into the safe ( Browning may have more than one now but aboiut 6yrs ago it was only one that new how to get them reopen and reset.....there are 2 vertical and 2 horizontal small pins that do the locking (normally) and then there are like 9 larger pins incase some one tries to a forced entry.....yeah they weigh almost a ton also (at least the one I am very familiar with weigh just under a ton ( i mean missed it by like 50#)...had to really re-enforce the floor where it sits which is in a house built back in the 1920's...........
Dan, Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. I hate thiefs with a passion. People go out and work hard and honestly for their things and some $%$#$ comes along and steals it. I think what Andy and Smugmug are doing is great. If you want to borrow my Glock let me know. It isn't a camera but it shoots real straight.:D
I'm so sorry to hear about gear. And props for smugmug for coming to the rescue.
You might want to make a posting about it in the gear section along with the description and serial numbers. Maybe someone will spot it on ebay or at a local pawn shop.
This guy posted the info and an alert dgrinner spotted the item on ebay.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Sounds like a pretty sweet setup you have. Thanks for your suggestion!

Thanks Jester,
Yup, I hate thieves too, and their parasitic existance.

Damn Dan, that really sucks. It's hard to get over that feeling of vulnerablity. Sounds like it may be time to move. Good luck getting your gear replaced. Getting that list of serial numbers out to other forums may be something to do as well. The more people that know, the better. Thieves suck.

Thank you, my friend. I agree, thieves suck bigtime.
